World Cup 2026 format explained: how 48 teams fit together
The 2026 World Cup is the biggest ever: 48 teams, 12 groups of 4, and 104 matches. The top two of each group plus the 8 best third-placed teams advance to a brand-new Round of 32, and from there it is straight knockout football to the final.
That one sentence hides a lot of detail — especially how third-placed teams are ranked and where they land in the bracket. Here is everything you need to fill in a bracket that actually follows the official rules.
The group stage: 12 groups of 4
The 48 teams are split into groups A through L. Every team plays the other three in its group once, with the usual 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. That makes 72 group matches — already more than the entire 64-match World Cups of the past.
Who advances? 32 of the 48 teams
The top two of each group qualify directly (24 teams). Then the 12 third-placed teams are ranked against each other by points, goal difference and goals scored — and the 8 best third-placed teams grab the remaining spots. Two thirds of the field advances, so group-stage elimination is brutal only for the bottom third.
The new Round of 32
This is the round that did not exist before 2026. The bracket is fixed in advance: each Round of 32 slot maps to specific group positions (for example, a group winner faces a third-placed team or a runner-up from another group). Which third-placed team goes where depends on the combination of groups that produce the best thirds — FIFA defines a table for all 495 possible combinations.
From there to the final
After the Round of 32 it is classic knockout football: Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place match and the final. A champion now has to win 8 matches instead of 7 — the longest road in World Cup history.
